Choosing the right fertility clinic

Choosing the right fertility clinic

Making a decision to pursue fertility treatment can be quite daunting. We need to cope with not having children the normal way and wrap our heads around the fact that our plan involves more than ourselves and our partner. In fact, it involves doctors and nurses, exams, scans, injections and tablets.

And with so many fertility clinics available in the UK, how do you choose the right clinic for you?

You may search on Google fertility clinic near me but there’s more to a clinic that just proximity.

Start by writing down a list of the aspects that matter to you. Some of these may be:

  • NHS vs Private Clinic
  • UK vs Abroad
  • Proximity to home or work
  • Type of treatments provided (like IUI,  IVF, ICSI, PGS, PGD…)
  • Price of treatments
  • Cost and Financing options
  • Reviews or recommendations
  • Success rates
  • More interventional vs natural fertility
  • Knowledgeable team
  • Regulatory certifications like HFEA and CQC
  • Physical and Emotional support
  • Friendly team
  • Acupuncture, reflexology and other therapies

Everyone prioritises different things so choose the factors that are important to you. Once you have it clear in your mind, you will be able to narrow down the search of fertility clinics. Now list all the clinics you have found that may fit your criteria. You may find it useful to create a table like the one below.

Regarding each topic that is important to you, rate the fertility clinics from 1 (doesn’t meet the criteria) to 5 (fully meet the criteria). In this example, all clinics are private and based in the UK, however Clinic A is close to home/work, whereas Clinic B is a bit out of the way and Clinic C is far from home/work. All these clinics offer the treatments I need, but Clinic C has a PGS and PGD which I may be interested in. All the clinics have good reviews and good success rates. Clinic A offers physical and emotional support, whereas Clinic B and C provide less emotional support. In terms of cost, Clinic A is cheaper than B and C. At the end add the total in each column.

Fertility Clinic Near Me

This exercise will help you make a decision. You may decide for example:

  1. I want to choose Clinic A because it’s closer, cheaper and provides the support I need
  2. Or I want to choose Clinic B because it’s a good combination of treatments, price and support.
  3. Or I want to choose Clinic C because it offers all ranges of treatment despite being further away.

This is an exercise I often do with clients to help them decide on the right fertility clinic for them. If you need support with this exercise, do get in touch with us today!

Fertility Network UK also has a good support network and HFEA that regulates clinics in the UK provides good information about clinics.
