Caffeine: how much is too much during your fertility journey?
Research has shown that:
it increases the length of time it takes to conceive: women who consume less than one cup of coffee are twice as likely to become pregnant, per cycle, as moderate coffee drinkers. The risk of not becoming pregnant increased with higher consumption.
in patients undergoing IVF, women who consume even modest amounts of caffeine (50 mg) were likely to have decreased live birth rates.
It is thought that caffeine:
causes sperm DNA damage
affects ovulation and corpus luteum functioning (hormonal)
Caffeine is not only in coffee! We can find it in tea, soda drinks and chocolate.
The goal is sensible consumption during the preconception period and during pregnancy to minimize any potential harmful effects.
If you are worried about the amount of caffeine you are drinking and would like to reduce and find a healthy alternative, speech to a fertility health coach that can advise you.
