Caffeine: how much is too much during your fertility journey?

Caffeine: how much is too much during your fertility journey?

Most of us get used to a couple of coffees to keep us going in the morning or during the day, but when we are trying to conceive and want to increase our chances of conception, it’s worth it to look at our coffee intake. So what has research found on caffeine and fertility?

Research has shown that:

  • Caffeine increases the length of time it takes to conceive: women who consume less than one cup of coffee are twice as likely to become pregnant, per cycle, as moderate coffee drinkers. The risk of not becoming pregnant increased with higher caffeine consumption.
  • In patients undergoing IVF, women who consume even modest amounts of caffeine (50 mg) were likely to have decreased live birth rates.
  • It is thought that caffeine:
  • Causes sperm DNA damage
  • Affects ovulation and corpus luteum functioning (hormonal)

Caffeine is not only in coffee! We can find caffeine in tea, soda drinks and chocolate.
